UFC 129 - An awesome display of Canada's MMA Fandom

What an event - it seems like it all came together perfectly last Saturday, the weather, the huge crowd, the dozens of UFC fighters at the fan expo, and of course the event itself.

Its funny how MMA fans can be so different from each other, I saw groups showing up that looked like they came straight off the set of the Trailer park boys and I saw a couple of Lamborghinis and Ferraris cruising to the event as well.  What a huge gap, somewhat like the gap in ticket prices ranging from $75 right up to a reported $28,000 for club suites. (essentially ticket prices ranged from what some folks earn in an hour to what some folks earn in a year)

Last week someone said to me that they wouldn't mind watching a live UFC but then he hopes it disappears as a sport, mainly because it is symbolic of our society devolving rather than evolving (though more sophisticated sports I presume).

Really? At first I disagreed, then I realized that perhaps I agree, I just don't think it is devolution, it is more like reconnecting with our roots. Whats wrong with re-adopting things from the past.  Most of us have started avoiding microwaved foods, we've started eating more raw plant based foods and organic foods, running is more popular than it has ever been - and one of the world's first Olympic sports, MMA, is now in 2011 the world's fastest growing sport. (MMA is akin to Pankration)

MMA is pure contest at its most intense level, it is not for everyone - but judging by the 55,000 tickets sold in 11 minutes for last weekend's event, it is alot more popular than most mainstream sports fans realize.
